Wind Up

I've been a little bogged down with my job, that other job I do to buff up the savings account, the various crafty things for upcoming presents (dear friends group: please, no more babies for a while) and the planning for a Really Big Event.  Enough so that writing has sort of flatlined.

So in the interest of breathing life back into it, I'm going to take a stab at 50 drabble prompts.

In my head, Lynn's relationship with her kuasha, Lady Caroline Sinclair, is this complex thing.  Kuasha-kit apprenticeships are typically very brief, lasting no more than a year and ending with the passing of the Yava and the teaching of certain rites.  Their situation was a little different, primarily due to Caroline's conviction in the preservation of their tribe; with fewer than one hundred Kahn left in the world, she wasn't about to send Linette off until she was positive the girl would survive.  And yes, Lynn was a tough little shit, but she was also functionally illiterate, totally uneducated, spoke only one language and had a dismaying tendency to piss off every spirit who'd deign to speak to her.  

What passed between them in the five years of Lynn's fostering is probably of very little interest, and boils down more to snippets and linchpin moments than to actual pieces of story.  Still, I want to poke at them a bit, to explore some of Lynn's  very rough transition from Mindless Survivalist to Canny Warrior, what Caroline managed to teach her and what wouldn't stick, what they could and couldn't share.  Most importantly, I want to explain, at least to myself, just why it is that Caroline's is the only opinion Linette genuinely cares about.  She is not a good person, not caring or compassionate or even very interested in others beyond brief relationships, but for Caroline she strives to be better. 

In case you hadn't noticed, I rather suck at short pieces.  This should be good practice.
